The Control Is Only as Good as Its Sensor
Every refrigerator, wine cabinet, and oven manages temperature by reading a sensor and acting on it. When the sensor drifts, the control chases the wrong number and the real temperature swings. Beyond sensors, a stuck damper starves one zone of cold air, a defrost cycle out of rhythm alternately warms and cools a refrigerator, and an oven that was never recalibrated overshoots or undershoots the setpoint. We measure actual temperature against the display to separate a model-specific fault from a normal cycling range.
Fluctuation by Cause
| What You Notice | Likely Cause | What It Needs |
|---|---|---|
| Fridge swings warm and cold | Failing thermistor or defrost timing | Sensor test, defrost check |
| One zone off in a wine cabinet | Zone thermistor or stuck damper | Replace sensor or damper |
| Oven overshoots setpoint | Drifted oven sensor | Verify cavity temp, replace sensor |
| Oven bakes low | Calibration or weak element | Recalibrate or replace element |
| Warm near the door only | Door seal drawing warm air | Replace gasket |
Notes by Brand
Temperature complaints vary across the roster. Sub-Zero refrigeration reports drift through its display and usually traces to a thermistor or damper on the affected side. Liebherr units frequently raise a temperature alarm and an E-series sensor code as the first sign. On cooking, Wolf and Thermador ovens that run hot or cold are most often a drifted sensor or a calibration that was never set for the home. Miele and Gaggenau ovens hold tight tolerances, so a small drift is noticeable and points straight to the sensor. Wine cabinets from True Residential and Sub-Zero swing when a single zone's thermistor or fan fails. We confirm with a reference thermometer before replacing anything.
