The Defrost Cycle Is the Key
A modern freezer makes a little frost on its coil during normal running and then melts it away on a timed defrost cycle. When any part of that cycle fails, frost accumulates until it blankets the coil and blocks airflow. Because that same airflow feeds the fresh-food section on many designs, a defrost failure often shows up as both a frosted freezer and a warming refrigerator. Separately, a door gasket that no longer seals lets humid room air in, which frosts near the opening. We test the defrost heater, thermostat, and control to find which link broke.

Frost patterns differ across the roster. Sub-Zero built-ins with a warm fridge and a frosted coil almost always have a defrost heater or thermostat down on that circuit, and clearing it restores both cooling and frost control. Viking and Thermador freezers commonly fail at the defrost sensor or control. Liebherr units may flag the problem with a temperature alarm before frost is obvious. Monogram and Jenn-Air models often trace to a defrost control board. Across all of them, a hardened gasket is a frequent, simple cause of frost near the door.
